Remember Me

Have you ever felt forgotten by God? You prayed, and did not receive the answer you wanted. Or maybe you have thought, “There are so many other people with much bigger issues, why would God spend an ounce of time thinking about me?”

If any of you observed Mr. Perman during the week of camp walking around with a small, pink stuffed owl (and if you didn’t see that you are picturing it now and probably laughing) it’s not because he has a special affinity for pink owls (wouldn’t that be funny though?) but it’s because he has a special affinity for our daughter Mikayla. Mikayla is 8 and she is a daddy’s girl….he is without a doubt her favorite person on the planet (I mean I carried her for nine months in my body and gave birth to her…..but its fine….her favorite person can be daddy).

Anytime he leaves on a trip she finds two matching stuffed animals and she gives one to him and she keeps one with her at all times, just so they remember to think of each other, and so she can feel like he is near……that he is thinking about her and that he will be home soon. So for camp this last week it was owls. She kept the blue one and packed the pink one away in his suitcase for him. It’s really hard for her to have him be away at camp for 8 days, so this sweet gesture helps with that. Mikayla knows he is incredibly busy with his kids at camp (side note: Did you know we call you OUR kids? We pray for and love and adore you. You are our kids) but what she doesn’t understand is that her daddy does not need a stuffed owl to remember her, she is ALWAYS on his mind and in his heart.

Did you know that your father in heaven has an amazing affinity and affection and devotion towards you? Did you know that it pains Him to not be close to you, and so all of creation exists to remind you how near He is? He has packed away in this world reminders to you how much He loves you, that he thinks of you, that he will return one day to be with you. On worship night when we all took communion together, this was a ceremonious and tangible practice given to us by Jesus with the instruction: “Do this in remembrance of me.” He sends us reminders because we need them. When things get hard, we need the reminder that He is there.

The only reason we need reminders to remember is because we forget. In fact we would not even need the word “remember” if it weren’t for the word “forget.” We forget how good God is. We forget the good things in our life. We forget the fight He won for us. We forget. We need help to remember.

But God does not need help remembering us. We are ALWAYS on his mind and on His heart. He says in Isaiah 49:14 “I will not forget you”. In fact His mindfulness of us is so epic that in Ephesians 1:4-6 it says: “Long before he laid down earth’s foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love. Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ. (What pleasure he took in planning this!) He wanted us to enter into the celebration of his lavish gift-giving by the hand of his beloved Son. The Message (MSG)

That is a God who is mindful of you. You do not need to tuck anything away in His suitcase for Him to think of you. Just like Mr. Perman carries his small stuffed pink owl around in his hand and proudly displays it as a token of devotion to his child, the God of the universe is carrying YOU around in his hand and proudly displays YOU as a token of devotion. The God who holds you securely in his hand has no ability to forget you.
